Marburg, the spirited University City in the heart of Germany, thanks to its geographical location and convenient public transportation, is an ideal meeting place for conference participants from all over the world.
Famous Characteristics:
"Other cities have a university, Marburg is a university,” as a saying goes. With about 18.000 students and 7.000 employees, the Philipps-University, today is the largest employer and the major economic factor in this city of almost 77.000 citizens and in the entire region. Over 30 international partnerships and exchange programmes tie the Philipps-University to colleges worldwide. More than 2.000 scientists and scholars teach and research at the university in Marburg; within this number are over 400 professors and university lecturers.
Five Leibniz Prize recipients, a new clinic, as well as many notable research projects and prominent institutes and facilities across all disciplines vouch for an excellent scientific reputation.
With its teaching and research, the university gives an important impetus to non-university enterprises, such as the successor companies of the Behring Works.
Emil von Behring, who founded the Behring Works in 1904, was not only the first Nobel Laureate for Medicine (1901) but also a professor of Medicine at the Philipps-University.
Science, education and research also deliver the “human capital” needed to secure a stable and lasting economic future for the area. For the past few years the university city of Marburg has therefore been utilizing this potential of knowledge as a resource for creative inventions and innovations in order to expand its groundwork for independent and enduring economic development and become the driving force behind the entire region.
The University City of Marburg, with its history, the Old City nestled between the Lahn River and the castle, the college flair and the scenic countryside surrounding, is an attraction for visitors from near and far.
From an historical perspective, the course of Marburg’s development was influenced by three notable events:
1. The works of St. Elisabeth of Hungary, Countess of Thuringia, who came to Marburg 1228: The pilgrimage church built after her death transformed Marburg into one of the prominent European pilgrimage towns and remains today an attractive tourist site.
2. The founding of the university in the year 1527 as the first Protestant University in the world: its presence brought the city a reputation that surpassed all surrounding cities and continues to the present. The university was the academic home of Emil von Behring, the first Nobel Laureate for Medicine, and thus influenced the growth of important Biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies at this site.
3. The annexation of the State of Hessen-Kassel und thus of Marburg by Prussia in the year 1866: The Prussian State not only advanced the university by building up new institutes but also encouraged the systematic construction of new city quarters and institutions.
In cooperation with the city and its commerce, the university serves the entire central Hessian region as an economic impetus under today’s conditions of a society based on technical knowledge and in a global world.
The university city of Marburg together with Gießen and Wetzlar compose the economic heart of central Hessen. Particularly the Philipps-University of Marburg and the Behring Works with all its successor firms and contacts have made Marburg known around the world.
The favourable geostrategic location is an advantage for many business connections; this economic region can be reached within one hour by train or automobile from the conurbation of Frankfurt am Main with its international airport, located 90 kilometres away.
The Bundesstraße 3 (national highway) south of Marburg connects the city with the national autobahn net in the direction of the metropolitan areas along the Rhein and the Ruhr Rivers as well as to the new federal states to the East.
At present, Marburg has approximately 86,000 inhabitants. The level of education of working persons is well above average; about 14% possess an academic degree.
Marburg is a registered municipality and thus competes in the highest league of Hessian cities. The surrounding suburban area has a population of approximately 140,000.
Among Marburgs most important industrial branches is the chemical industry with more than 10% of all employees. Regional industry is characterized further by electronic technology, automobile construction as well as printing and duplications. The number of compulsorily insured employees rose in roughly fifteen years from 27,093 (1984) to 34,480 (2000), showing an above average increase as compared to other municipal areas. In the last seven years alone, 3,500 new jobs were created.
81.7% of compulsorily insured employees in Marburg work in the service sector, 18.1% in production. The highest rate of employment in Marburg is found in the areas of health (university clinics) and scholastics (university); together they employ a total of over 10,000 persons. As a municipality it has all the important government offices, cultural and social institutions as well as a wide array of home economic and business-related services, especially in construction and technical trades.
Marburg is also a shopping and tourist attraction with a nice balance between shopping centres on the edge of town, modern inner-city centres, first-class hotels and the individual shops with their unique selections, pleasant cafés, restaurants and pubs in historic architecture. The GFK Regionalforschung (a consumer research group) calculated the per capita purchasing power relevant to retail trade at 92,9 and centrality at 121,2.
Finally, Marburg has established a centralised information and contact site by unifying the city-centre advertising circuits under the Markt- und Aktionskreis Marburg MAK (a marketing and campaign group) and by effecting its close cooperation with the office of tourism (MTM).
"Universitätsstadt Marburg” (University City of Marburg) greets the visitor from each sign when entering the city.
The Philipps-Universität makes its impact on the city’s life in a variety of ways: in economics, culture, urban planning, social diversity and by adding its own special flair.
You can find more detailed, first hand information on the university’s homepage or Marburg city homepage (please search yourself with Marburg keywords via google, yahoo, etc.)

MEETING FACILITIES AND CONNECTIVITY:
Marburg University has two facilities that can be used for this conference. Erlenring Conference Hall and General Conference Center includes two auditoriums and more than 20 meeting rooms, all of which are wired for Internet access with ethernet or WLAN. This facility is located immediately adjacent to the Student Center which contains a food court, cafeteria, and several other such facilities. Further, the use of this facility costs nothing.
Another facility which has just opened on campus is Lahnbergerge Area. While this is primarily a special events center, it also includes several meeting rooms, including 8 breakout rooms immediately adjacent to each other, as well as a large general session room. These meeting rooms are also wired for Internet access or WLAN. While this facility incurs a use fee, it is very reasonable. Further, because of the close proximity of the breakout rooms, it facilitates transition among breakout sessions.
TRANSPORTATION AVAILABILITY:
Train transportation access to Marburg Station (Old Town) is perfect; The airport is located on the Hessen Region, about one hour from the Marburg University campus and serves the Frankfurt metropolitan area with scheduled bus/train service. Additionally, there is a very good highway facility from Marburg to the airport.
Some participants may wish to rent a car and enjoy a 1.5 hour drive through Hessen' country-side to Marburg campus. Alternatively, one could disembark in Frankfurt and rent a car and enjoy a 1.5 or 2 hour drive, respectively, if this would better fit one's conference and post-conference plans.
National rental car agencies available inside the airport terminal building include Avis, etc., with additional rental car agencies available off airport.
LODGING AVAILABILITY AND COST:
Blocks of rooms are available at national/regional housing chains in the area including Sorat Hotel, Best Western/Marburg Hotel am Schlossberg, Europaeischer Hof Marburg, Vila Vita Hotel, etc.
There are over 600 rooms available among the Pensionen/Privatzimmer around campus area. Common rates include $30/$59 single/double, as well as flat rates (single or double) ranging from $55 to $199.

ORGANIZATIONAL COMMITMENT:
Part of the university rectorate staff as well as several members of Indonesian/ASEAN partner organizations will be involved in hosting this conference. We expect that at least various members of organizations or foundations will partner with us.
Along with several faculty centers, other units of the Marburg Rectorate Extension Service will provide necessary technological equipment (beamers, projectors, computers, etc.) for the conference, thereby eliminating the need for renting such equipment.
Registration support will be provided by staff of the Marburg University Scheduling and Services office who specialize in arranging conferences and handling registration. Further, the Rectorate Secretariat, Student's house and Guesthouses' Bureau will provide support regarding lodging, transportation, dining, and other such services that make visitors more comfortable while in town.
DESCRIPTION OF TOURIST ATTRACTIONS:
Marburg Old Town has a number of tourist attractions available, but undoubtedly the most popular is the Old Palace (Landgrafenschloss), St. Elisabeth tomb, and other historically fascinating buildings located adjacent to our event location around the Marburg University campus or the city center.

Most popular among tourists is the Riverwalk with its many restaurants and shops, near the River Lahn or Rhein.
Marburg, Kassel, Wiesbaden, Mainz are highlighting the heritage of the original West European entlightements/protestanism. A little further along the river trip are historical ruins of the Roman Empire.
