PARTICIPATION

General/basic information:

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Open to all (international and domestic participants)
The organizer and the co-organizers, in the international spirit of Achinese Sumatran Cooperation Week Conferences in Europe, extend an especially warm invitation to our colleagues from outside Germany to join us in Marburg.
The exhibitions and cultural presentations are impresive for family entertainment to review the forgotten heritage of Achinese Sumatran civilization. The Achinese international conference is expected to be attractive not only to scholarly (academicians) and policy audiences (politicians), but also to students in Asian and interdisciplinary studies. In the policy community, this event is expected to attract the interest of businessmen, government officials, NGO staff and development/technical workers to share reconstruction strattegies for Aceh Sumatra after the Tsunami Disaster (2004) & Helsinki Peace Accord (2005).

WHY ACEH SUMATRA?
A project "Achinese Event in diaspora" opened by asking: Why Aceh Sumatra?”

Aceh Sumatra lies in a strategic position of the Malacca Straits in Asia. This region is one of the busy straits for sea transportation in the world, the gateway to Southeast Asian archipelago. In short, Aceh region, at the northwestern end of Sumatra, is the firsts of the archipelago to have contact and be influenced by the outside world and has a fascinating history which over the centuries has shaped and transformed the region into what it is today. This marvellous land or the "promised land" on the northern tip of Sumatra island in Souteast Asia is also called "Serambi Mekkah" (the Verandah of Mecca). Aceh Sumatra has in fact been home to and the site of interaction among international nations or ethnic groups since before these ethnic appellations settled influenced by Islamic cultures into their modern identities. As this was happening, during the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the Aceh Sumatra playground was the site of the melting pots - between Achinese monarchy and Dutch colonialism and Indonesian nation-states, Islam and Modernism, island and mainland Southeast Asia: the crossroads of Indian, Chinese, Arabic and European influences. Recent years Aceh Sumatra is in the internatinal focus, after the Tsunami Disaster (December 2004) & Helsinki Peace Accord (August 2005), along with the growing realization of alternative reconstuction projects, industrialization by developing alternative energies and the building of the new spirit of the universal democratic society, without "clash of culture tendencies".

SUMMARY STATEMENT:
We are committed to making Aceh Week 2006 a high-quality professional development activity for future cooperation projects with a broad range of interests and a broad range of budgets. It is our intent to hold registration costs to a bare minimum for those on limited budgets or free of charge foe conference workshops, while offering the frills on an optional basis for those wishing to participate in them. We believe that the facilities available on our campus for a cooperation conference such as this are among the best that can be found anywhere. Within easy driving distance to Marburg campus area are such major international companies and we expect to invite executives from these companies as speakers for general sessions. Also located on the campus of Marburg University is the Center for International Research, a partnership between MAFEX and other institutions to explore together the strategy of global cooperation for institutional purposes. The director of MAFEX will work very closely with other relevant institutions on this conference, and also plans to offer one or more post-conference workshops.
Regarding the post-conference workshops, it is our intent to offer in-depth training on such topics as bulding network administration, wide area network administration, and other very technical topics, using highly qualified instructors available both from industry and from the staff of Marburg University. While these are topics that occur to us presently, we will solicit ideas from across the nation about topics that are desired at that time. Given the rate of change of experts/staffs, and the fact that this conference is the first of its kind, it is foolish to be really specific in this project.
While we feel we can offer a very appealing professional conference, our primary motivation in making this proposal is that of being good citizens in this profession we have chosen. That means taking a proactive role, assuming responsibility, and carrying out those responsibilities for the good of the entire profession: we are proud of the team, partners, sponsors and resources we have to host this conference.
